Arig al Shaibah, Ph.D.

Dr. Arig al Shaibah is UBC’s Associate Vice-President, Equity & Inclusion (AVPEI). As a member of the Provosts’ and President’s leadership teams, Dr. al Shaibah works across all Executive portfolios to champion strategic equity and anti-racism priorities and advance inclusive excellence at UBC. She also oversees the university’s Equity & Inclusion Office, with teams on the Vancouver and Okanagan campuses.

Dr. al Shaibah completed a Bachelor of Science (Life Sciences), a Master of Public Administration, and a Doctorate in Education (Cultural and Policy Studies). In addition to her administrative appointment at UBC, she holds an Honorary Associate Professor role with the Department of Educational Studies in UBC’s Faculty of Education, and teaching courses in the Higher Education (HIED) and Educational Administration and Leadership (EDAL) Programs. Prior to joining UBC, Dr. al Shaibah served as McMaster University’s inaugural Associate Vice-President Equity & Inclusion and was an Adjunct Associate Professor with the Department of Sociology and and Instructor in the Arts & Science Program. At Dalhousie University she was Vice-Provost of Student Affairs and Interim Executive Director for the Human Rights & Equity Services, and was Adjunct Professor with cross appointments in Sociology & Anthropology, Gender & Women’s Studies, and Public Administration. And, at Queen’s University, her alma mater, she held leadership roles as Manager of Faculty Advancement and Assistant Dean of Student Affairs, and she was an Adjunct faculty member and instructor cross appointed to Gender Studies and Interdisciplinary Studies.

Dr. al Shaibah describes herself as a scholar-practitioner. Her academic and profession work has been grounded in a deep interest in the study and practice of policymaking, viewed through a critical-oriented and globally-engaged lens. Her interdisciplinary scholarly works, teaching and professional practice have focused broadly on examining policy-based structural inequities (primarily gender and racial inequities) and specifically on higher education policy, politics and practices as they relate to educational access and success, international mobility and internationalization at home (I@H), equality and human rights, intercultural and intergroup relations, as well as equitable leadership, administration, governance, and organizational change paradigms and practices.

In 2021, Dr. al Shaibah received the Angela Hildyard Recognition Award in Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion granted by the Senior Women Academic Administrators of Canada, recognizing exceptional leadership in fostering and furthering institutional equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Elsie Achugbue

Elsie is a planner, project manager and researcher with 20 years of experience working primarily in the nonprofit sector supporting community and economic development efforts in historically marginalized communities. She has contributed to the development and implementation of research and evaluation initiatives aiming to attract investment to underserved urban neighborhoods and to promote equity and inclusion in city and regional planning processes. Elsie maintains a deep and consistent commitment to social justice and to facilitating and celebrating the recognition, respect, and representation of difference.

Lucy Buchanan-Parker, MSc

Lucy manages implementation structures and processes to advance UBC’s Strategic Equity and Anti-Racism (StEARFramework and Roadmap for Change and provides leadership on project management in the EIO. Lucy holds a Master’s in Social Policy and Planning from the London School of Economics and Political Science. She brings over ten years of experience working to advance equity, diversity, and inclusion in both the non-profit and postsecondary sectors through strategic planning, project management, research and analysis, and evaluation. Outside of work, Lucy enjoys being active in the outdoors.

Elisabeth Giffin

Elisabeth provides impartial human rights advice and information to all members of the UBC community.

Prior to joining the EIO, Elisabeth was a litigator in private practice, having practised primarily in the area of worker’s rights. Elisabeth has knowledge and experience with the human rights landscape both in Canada and abroad, and brings compassion and practicality to her work. She obtained her J.D. from the Peter A. Allard School of Law at UBC, and her Bachelor of Social Sciences from the University of Ottawa.

Louise Griep, MA

Strategist, Institutional Initiatives

Bio

Louise is passionate about exploring UBC’s institutional systems, and developing and implementing plans to make them more equitable and inclusive. She conducted the 2019 Employment Systems Review, and facilitated the campus-wide engagement and development of the Inclusion Action Plan, the Employment Equity Plan, and the Canada Research Chair (CRC) Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Action Plan.

Louise supports the implementation of these plans through facilitation of the Inclusion Action Leads Community of Practice, and the CRC Working Group and Implementation Team. She also engages in other research and pilot projects to explore and demonstrate possibilities for more equitable systems, such as the BC Office of the Human Rights Commissioner’s Special Programs.

Hélène Frohard-Dourlent, PhD

Associate Director, Institutional Initiatives

Hélène provides strategic planning and implementation support for organizational change initiatives focused on systems, processes and institutional practices. Their work has focused on initiatives related to creating supportive work and learning environments for trans and non-binary students, faculty and staff, including questions of gender data and gendered records (names, pronouns, etc.). They provided strategic and operational leadership and support to the Trans, Two-Spirit and Gender Diversity Task Force that worked between 2020 and 2022.

Hélène also supports central portfolios to develop and implement EDI objectives in alignment with the StEAR framework, such as the implementation of the Canada Research Chair EDI Action Plan and the development of guidance and infrastructure to support for more accessible and equitable hiring practices.

Hélène holds a PhD in Sociology from UBC.

Maureen Mendoza, MA

Bio

As project manager for the Student Diversity initiative, Maureen comes to the Equity & Inclusion office with experience working for local and regional governments, university and community-based research projects, and the non-profit immigrant service sector. Maureen is a double degree UBC alumni graduating from the UBC School of Community and Regional Planning (Social and Community Planning), and an honors BA in Sociology. She is also an alumnus from the University of Toronto, where she earned a MA in Sociology. Outside of the EIO office, Maureen is active in the Filipino-Canadian community, serving newly arrived immigrant youth through mentorship – an endeavor that continuously inspires her intersectional work in planning, education, and social justice.

Ashley joins UBC with 10 years of experience within conflict consultancies where she has been facilitating, training and conducting informal conflict engagement processes for public, private, and not-for profit organizations. Her interest lies with opportunities for transformative change inherent at the intersection of justice, equity, inclusion, diversity (JEDI) and complex conflict. An avid outdoor enthusiast, Ashley escapes any nascent cynicism through communion with/in the mountains.

Tasha Nijjar

Dialogue and Conflict Transformation Facilitator

Bio

Tasha is a settler, of Punjabi descent, living in Vancouver on unceded xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlil̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) territory. She is passionate about exploring how creativity and social change overlap. She has worked with various community and youth-led organizations using art, film, theatre and social media to amplify grassroots voices. Tasha comes to UBC with over a decade of experience working with communities in the not for profit sector. In the past she was worked with community groups trying to create transformative change through inclusive sexual health education, migrant justice, and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh language reclamation. She is currently in the process of completing a Master’s Degree specializing in equity and social justice education.
