EDI Action Network Gathering #5

Overview

Join us for the fifth gathering of the EDI Action Network, a space for connection, shared learning, and development for students, faculty and staff working to advance equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) initiatives within their departments and units to build a more inclusive UBC.

Presenters

  • Vanessa Andreotti, Professor, Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies
  • Bernadette Mah, Program Manager, Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies
  • Erin Trifunov, Client Services Manager, Information Technology
  • Kat Cureton, Advisor, Community Engagement
  • Holly Kim, Operations and Program Coordinator, Community Engagement
  • Nadia Joe, Co-Senior Project Manager, UBC Climate Emergency, Sustainability Hub

What to expect

Dr. Arig al Shaibah, Associate Vice-President, Equity and Inclusion, will welcome participants and provide an update on institutional EDI initiatives at UBC.  We will highlight tools and resources about the complexities of systems change and discuss how we situate our EDI efforts in the context of larger systems change. We will also feature our customary panel of faculty and staff presenting on how they have structured EDI efforts in their own departments and units, focusing on their lessons learned and ingredients for success.

This gathering will also include opportunities for connection with colleagues leading EDI initiatives across UBC through facilitated breakout rooms.

Who can join

This network is open to all who fit the participation criteria:

  • Working to advance an EDI initiative at UBC, including for example, creating an EDI strategy or plan or developing or changing existing programming with an EDI lens. The initiative may be within your immediate unit or connected to a broader effort such as a cross-portfolio working group or identity-based affinity group.
  • In a position to influence the work of your EDI initiative including but not necessarily in a formal leadership role.
  • Engaged in the continuous process of deepening your learning about EDI and your personal relationship to issues of power, privilege, and marginalization. This type of individual learning is essential to our ability to effectively navigate EDI change efforts, but is not the focus of the EDI Action Network. As a result, we expect members to find opportunities for this learning, either through lived experience or from experts and programs with that explicit focus (for example courses, workshops, discussion groups, and readings).
