Overview

In celebration of Black History Month, join “The Drag and Ball of It All” to pay homage to the Queer Black folks who have shifted our current music, fashion and language trends. With a focus on the intersection between Blackness and Queerness, you will learn about the history and cultural significance of the ballroom scene and its influence on current popular culture.

Enjoy interactive activities including a moderated conversation with Mimi Mutahi, a trivia-style quiz on the ballroom scene, and a drag performance from accomplished drag artist, Kendall Gender! This event is free and open to all.

*This event is a collaboration between the Equity & Inclusion Office, the Student Experience Office and the African Caribbean Student Club.

What to expect

  • Enjoy a drag performance from Kendall Gender, an accomplished drag artist who has competed on season 2 of Canada’s Drag Race and Canada’s Drag Race: Canada vs. the World
  • Hear from UBC Alumni, Mimi Mutahi, on the history and cultural significance of the ballroom scene
  • Enjoy light refreshments and test your knowledge of the ballroom scene with a fun trivia quiz
  • Enter to win a 2023 Black Care Basket and two Queerphoria tickets
